Go Go Power Rangers! …for Famicom

I’ve still been collecting and gaming a lot the last couple of months, and my latest addition that arrived in the mail today was two Power Rangers games for Famicom! I’ve seen both of these occationally as pirated copies, and I actually never thought they really existed as released games. Until I bumped into the originals from a japanese seller on eBay ^_^ I bought them instantly because I’ve always wanted to know what they would be like, and I assumed they would be platforming games, which I love!

The first one is called Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, and this one is not too good.. but they definitely made an effort!

Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - start

Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - yellow
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - pink
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - blue
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - black
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - red
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - evil queen
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - guy

It’s a platforming game, but the controls are a bit slow, unresponsive and stiff. You can collect orbs and when your meter fills you get a scene with the machine/animal the Power Ranger can transform into, but I tried every possible combination of buttons and did not manage to transform >_<

Then I reached a boss and 4 hits kill you even though you have a much larger power meter than just 4 bars.. deceiving! After reaching Game Over I gave up, it just wasn’t any fun..

However, they have 3 bonus games you can play, some are even 2 player! The first one is some kind of quiz where you get three answers to choose from. This is all in Japanese and I don’t really know that much facts about Power Rangers anyway ;D

The second one is a kind of Pong game, this can be played in VS.

In the third one you throw a bomb between you and the monster and who ever holds it when it explodes looses. You can hold it for a little while but if you hold it too long it also explodes even though the time limit isn’t up.

These extra games are nothing special, they should have put more effort into making the platforming experience better instead!

The second Power Ranger game is called Choujin Sentai Jetman. This game was much more fun! It’s also a platformer, and if felt way more like the series I remember from my childhood.

Choujin Sentai Jetman - select Power Ranger

First you run around as the human form Power Rangers, and you can choose from the 5 different ones. The Grey and Red one have swords which kills enemies with 1 or 2 hits. The Pink and Blue one have some type of long range gun, but it takes 2 or 3 hits to kill enemies though. The Yellow Power Ranger has a short range blow that is similar to the sword.

Choujin Sentai Jetman - stage 5

There are 5 various stages to choose freely from.

At the end of each stage you reach a boss, and this is when your Power Ranger transforms!
Choujin Sentai Jetman - stage 2 boss

Then you get to fight the monster in a kind of beat ’em up / fighting style battle. This gets quite easy once you learn the patterns of the bosses and how to block in time ^_^

Choujin Sentai Jetman - stage 6 boss

After all 5 stages there’s a 6th Last Stage.

The boss on this stage was hard if you tried to have time to block, I eventually just went all in punching him and managed to get more blows in than he did ^_^

This games was quite easy, but fun nonetheless :) And the music wasn’t all that bad either ^^

    • Omg yes! If you don’t have one you really should get it! There’s sooooo many amazing games for it ^^ also it’s easier to find the rare and expensive NES titles for a better prize in their Japanese release ^^ I would suggest getting a twin Famicom by Sharp since it’s more convenient than having to get a disk station later on… also it doesn’t have to be modded like the original Famicom which only has outputs for Japanese old televisions ^^

      • I’m tracking a few Twin Famicoms on eBay as I type! ;) Do you have any game recommendations for someone new to Famicom collecting? I usually only collect boxed copies but I’ve decided to just buy carts for the Famicom to make things a little cheaper (and easier!).

      • I mainly collect just carts for the Famicom as well, it was much easier and cheaper in the beginning, but now after owning over 800 of them it’s getting hard to organize them so that I can find them when I’m looking for a certain game ;D
There are sooo many great games for it though, what type of genres are you into? I’m mainly into platformers, shooters and puzzle games. Here are a few I enjoy that I don’t think were released on the NES: Binary Land, Bomber King, Cocoron, Crisis Force, Dai Meiro: Meikyu no Tatsujin, Datsugoku, Devil World, Doki! Doki Yuuenchi!, Don Doko Don 1 & 2, Door Door, Dragon Spirit, Final Mission, Flappy, Getsufuu Maden, Gorby no Pipeline, Gun Nac, Hebereke, Hoshi no Kirby, Joy Mecha Fight, Jyuuoki (a strange version of Altered Beast), Kage, Kame no Ongaeshi Urashima Densetsu, Kaiketsu Yanchamaru 3, Kamen no Ninja Hanamaru, Kyattou Ninden Teyandee (Samurai Pizza Cats), Max Warrior, Mighty Bomb Jack, Mighty Final Fight, Mitsume Ga Toru, Paaman 1 & 2, Parodius Da!, Power Blazer, Robocco Wars, Shufflepuck Café, Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti, Star Wars, Tetris BPS (best tetris ever with TechnoTetris soundtrack) ;D, Tokkyu Shirei Solbrain, Transformers Mystery of Convoy (soooo difficult!), Twinbee games, Wagyan Land 3, Wai Wai World 1 & 2, Yume Penguin Monogatari.
Other games that are excellent and also released for the NES are: Bucky O’Hare, Dead Fox (Code name viper), Fudou Myouuden (Demon Sword), Ninja Ryuukenden 1-3 (Ninja Gaiden), Rockman 1-6 (Megaman games), Rolling Thunder, Salamander (Life Force), Seirei Densetsu Lickle (Little Samson), Street Fighter 2010, Takahashi Meijin games (Adventure Island), Tiger Heli…
        Well there’s a start ^_^

      • Wow thanks for that! :) I had literally no idea where to start with Famicom collecting so that list is a great place to start…. Well my favourite genre is shooters (hence my love for the PC Engine and Saturn), but I like platformers and puzzle games too. I’m actually excited to discover some of these Famicom gems! I think you’ve got me hooked! Look out for some Famicom reviews on my site soon :)

800???? Impressive! Do you play any of the Disk System games?

  2. Waa, they are what I had seen on TV when I was little.
I didn’t know there exist TV games of them… anyway I’ll get them too!

  3. I’ve never played the Power Rangers one, but I have played the rom of the Sentai Jetman game. I thought it seemed Power Rangers-ish, and this is before I became familiar with the previous Goranger shows from Japan before our westernized Power Rangers came about. It’s a pretty weird, but neat little game.
