My Retro Room has once more been improved, it’s bigger and better and now twice the size of my last room! Once I had finished the moving and decorations of the new room I had retro gaming party to fully inaugurate it! I hosted a retro gaming competition, my friend NinjaBrite set up a music quiz with a retro gaming theme and there were loads of people playing loads of games! I am extremely happy that well over 30 people showed up :D
In the competition the following games were played: Hector ’87 / Famicom, Ninja Spirit / PC Engine, Musha Aleste / Sega Mega Drive, BPS Tetris / Famicom, and Halo / Xbox 360. I know the last one is not very retro, but since my boyfriend only plays this one game he thought it would be fun to add it in the competition to see how many kills the contestants could get playing against him ;D (the most amount of kills one person got was 3..).
There were a total of 26 contestants! Ranging from people who are total gamers that work with games to people that haven’t played since they were kids, but the competition was still pretty even!
In the semi-finals four contestants battled each other in three different games on the Super Famicom: Bomberman, V.S Collection and Battle Cross. The two finalists that made it to the end had a stand off in Fatman for the Mega Drive! This was hilarious to watch since the controls are awful in this game and the hit detection is incredibly glitchy!! haha so it gave them both an equal chance ^_^
Christian came out victorious, but all the finalists got prizes ^^

Through a projector on the wall people could also try out the incredibly frustrating and renowned to be impossible game: Cat Mario! This was a great hit, since people kept cheering each other on and tried to beat more and more stages. For every stage that was beaten I handed out a mini-prize to the person that made it ^^ Eventually at the end of the evening the game had actually been beaten through a collective effort :D (For those of you who have never played this game, I suggest you give it a go! It’s a lot of fun ^_^)
We also got a cosplayer on Retro Rumble! Jocke went all in dressing up as the Hitman! It was amazing!! ^_^

Jocke as Hitman. look at that precious suitcase filled with strangling cord, dual revolvers and a gun with a silencer!

Here are some more pictures from the evening that I was given from some of the friends that were there:
Thanks everyone for joining in! I hope I’ll see you all again for Retro Rumble 2014! :D
(p.s. I will make a guided tour of my new Retro Room soon..) ;D
Meanwhile, here’s a movie I put together with all the clips I got from some of the guests ^_^ Enjoy!
BTW, FredJ blogged about the event as well, he wrote in more detail about all of the games ^_^ Check it out here: Japanspel
woops I didn’t expect that. Also didn’t notice that someone took my photo. :)
Excellent! I don’t have people over here that often because they usually see the library and faint and I need to drag them outside afterwards. If your BF likes a bit of story with his shooting, get him a copy of Metro: Last Light for the 360 or go “old school last gen” and grab Left 4 Dead 2 and maybe The Orange Box…
I really enjoyed Metro Last Light until I got stuck on the Bear Boss. Left 4 Dead is excellent! Best when co-op. And the Orange Box is amazing. Half Life 2 is still a great game and I never realized how awesome Portal was until I finally gave it a try. I couldn’t stop until I completed it.
Very cool.
And I thought we were the only people who enjoyed playing FATMAN.
My friends and I have been having FATMAN Tournaments since 1990. :)
I enjoy Fatman :)
What is that book in your link?
Oops…Sorry for the extremely late reply.
Anyway, it’s just a book I threw together when Snapfish was offering a free photo book giveaway on their website. I only had a day to make it before their promo was to expire so I gathered a bunch of pictures I had and turned it into that.
I have more pictures of it, along with my collection at http://www.videogameobsession.com
FATMAN Is an absolute blast when you play Mondu vs Mondu and use the Slow and Ice weapons. The game will often get glitchy and there will be an instant kill where one or both characters will get crushed. It’s too much fun. :)
Take it easy,
Matt
Wow, just wow :D I can’t believe you’ve upgraded your Retro Room again!
I’m still trying to fill my two book shelves :P
What you’ve done looks so awesome! I love all the consoles in the glass cabinets all setup and ready to go. That rocks. What kind of video switches are you using to get so many system connected to those TV’s?
And Retro Rumble 2013 was a great idea! It really was a big hit. Looks very fun.
I had Fatman when it was new and I was upset because I also thought it was pretty bad. But I had paid good money for it and I keep playing it. Then, slowly, I started to figure it out and I got good! It’s not at all a button masher you really do have to know what the moves are. I was able to beat the game and I enjoyed it so much more than I thought I would. It’s no Street Fighter, not by a long shot, but it’s a better game than any first impression can give.
But regardless it looks like you had a hilarious showdown :D
So. Freaking. EPIC…………..
:D thanks!
That looks like it was an awesome party.
And your game room is amazing, I wish I had the space to do something like that. I particularly like the way you have those Famicom carts (at least I think those are Famicom carts) displayed on the wall above the TVs. Amazing.
Thanks! ^_^ Yes they are famicom carts, all my favorite ones, so I can easily see them and pick them up and play :) It’s just regular IKEA shelves, placed three in a row, they’re not that expensive :)
All I can say is wow. I take it this room is in your house?! It’s so incredibly laid out with so much attention to detail and care for the games it could almost be a museum (an ultra cool, chilled out, cosy one obviously!). If you ever need a job I’m sure any museum would hire you in an instant :D
Thanks! I’m happy you like it :) I put a lot of effort into organizing and displaying everything neatly ^_^ It’s always more fun to play in a room that is cosy and pretty as well as fun :D
*looks around at untidy living room* Wish I knew what that felt like! :/
Inspired by your blog I just wrote a post about videogame shelving space :D My situation is a little different to yours though… I think it’s obvious how if you look :P http://veryverygaming.wordpress.com/2014/01/13/videogame-storage-tips-pt-1/
Looks like a great LAN party! Wish I were there
looks fun!
