My Castlevania Collection!

So what’s on this shelf.. well I have scanned all of my Castlevania games, so let’s start with the 8-bits and move forwards ^_^
edit: now my collection is taking up two shelves ^_^

edit: Now I’ve moved into a bigger game room and my Castlevania collection takes up an entire glass cabinet ^_^ And I’ve gotten this pretty Castlevania bit art frame from Cave of Pixels :D

Nintendo NES Castlevania games

Castlevania
The first Castlevania adventure for the NES. I have found a nice complete copy ^_^ I also have a rental box copy from Yapon that was released here in Sweden.

Castlevania II Simon’s Quest
I got a complete PAL version of the second Castlevania adventure for the NES, Simon’s Quest :)

Castlevania III Dracula’s Curse
This one is complete in box and in quite nice condition.

Castlevania reproduction / hacks

Castlevania Blood Moon
This is not an actual release, it’s an NES reproduction cart with a fan-made hack of the Castlevania game.

Castlevania Chorus of Mysteries
This one is also an NES reproduction cart with a fan made hack.

Famicom & Famicom Disk System Castlevania

Akumajou no Densetsu 悪魔城伝説 (Castlevania III Dracula’s Curse)
The third Castlevania game, released for the Famicom.

Akumajou Special Boku Dracula-kun 悪魔城すぺしゃる ぼくドラキュラくん
A cute platforming spinnoff of the Castlevania series. Released for the Famicom by Konami. I have it complete in box in really nice condition but just scanned the cart for the Famicom collection.

Akumajou no Dracula 悪魔城ドラキュラ (Castlevania I)
The first Castlevania adventure for the Famicom Disk System. I have this one complete with the outer plastic box and manual, but scanning the complete package with that box looks terrible >_< So I just scanned the inner case with the game and inlay.

Dracula 2 The Accursed Seal (Noroi no Fuuin) ドラキュラII呪いの封印 (Castlevania II Simon’s Quest)
The second Castlevania game on Famicom Disk System. Same here I have it complete in box with manual, but scanned the inner case with game and inlay.

Castlevania on MSX

Akumajou Dracula
I just bought this from another Castlevania collector. Since I’ve recently gotten myself an MSX system I thought it was time to invest in a copy of the Castlevania game for it ^_^ I’m not sure however whether my MSX is an MSX 2 or not.. I hope I will be able to play it o_O

Castlevania on Sharp X68000

Akumajou Dracula
I just got Castlevania for Sharp X68000, I’ve been hesitating a lot on this one since I don’t own the system to play it on. I’ve also heard that the Sharp X68000 is quite rare, expensive and difficult to obtain. So I won’t be able to play it for probably quite some time :( But at least the beautiful box is now gracing my Castlevania Collection shelf..

Castlevania handhelds

Castlevania II Simon’s Quest Tiger handheld
Here’s a handheld version of the Simon’s Quest Castlevania game. It’s really nothing like Simon’s Quest for the NES, it’s a very basic sidescrolling beat ’em up, but still a nice edition to the collection ^_^

Castlevania Symphony of the Night Tiger handheld
Much like the Simon’s Quest Tiger handheld, this is also just a side-scrolling beat ’em up game, though a bit more advanced with more options.

Nintendo Game Boy Castlevania

Dracula Densetsu トラキュラ伝説 (Castlevania Adventures)
The first Castlevania game for the Game Boy. I wrote a bit about this game here. One thing that baffles me about this game is that hearts = health, where is the wall chicken?! I have this game in PAL edition as well, however only the loose cartridge.

Dracula Densetsu  II トラキュラ伝説II (The Castlevania Adventure II Belmont’s revenge)
The second Castlevania game for the Game Boy. Great adventure, great music. Shouldn’t be missed out on, all the Castlevania Game Boy games are completely new adventures, not just ports of the NES/Famicom games. I have this in PAL as well, but just the cartridge.

Akumajou Dracula Shikkokutaru Zensoukyoku 悪魔城ドラキュラダークナイトプレリュード (Castlevania Legends)
Probably my favourite Castlevania adventure for the Game Boy. I made a video of where I finished it here. Really hard final boss! But thanks to the password system I managed to go back and finally beat him ^_^ Great music in this one! Like most Castlevania games ;D You should really check out my video just to listen to the first stage song, a great remix of the Daylight music from Simon’s Quest! Also the Final Boss brings back the Vampire Killer theme song but in a new version, it’s kickass!! What are you waiting for? Go put on that video in the background to listen to those awesome tunes! ^_^

Castlevania Legends
I also have the PAL edition for Game Boy.

Castlevania II Belmont’s Revenge
This is the same as Dracula Densetsu II, but the PAL release :) I’m still missing the first one in PAL release, but it’s still the same game so I can play the Japanese one meanwhile ^_^

Nintendo Game Boy Advance Castlevania

Akumajou no Dracula 悪魔城ドラキュラ (Castlevania)
The Famicom Mini Edition. Castlevania re-released for the Game Boy Advance in Japan.

Castlevania NES CLASSICS
The NES Classics edition for the Game Boy Advance. Also contains a re-release of the first Castlevania game for the NES.

Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance
The third Castlevania adventure for the Game Boy Advance. There was a Game Boy Advance release that contained both Aria of Sorrow and Harmony of Dissonance but I haven’t been able to find it yet in decent condition.

Castlevania Aria of Sorrow
My favourite Castlevania adventure for the Game Boy Advance. You can collect the enemies’ souls and gain their powers! :D IT’S AWESOME!

Castlevania Circle of the Moon
Also for the Game Boy Advance, also a great adventure with some memorable tunes ^_^

Super Nintendo SNES Castlevania

Super Castlevania IV
The first Castlevania game for the Super Nintendo and I’ve finally found myself a complete copy ^_^ Haven’t gotten around to scanning it yet.. but I will :)

Akumajou Dracula 悪魔城ドラクラ (Super Castlevania IV)
The first Castlevania game for the Super Nintendo / Super Famicom. This is the Japanese release.

Akumajou Dracula XX 悪魔城ドラクラXX (Castlevania Vampire’s Kiss)
One of the rare Castlevania titles. This is a japanese release, complete and in great condition. The PAL version is really hard to find.. but I’m looking ^^

Castlevania Dracula X Evil Trevor
This is a hack of Castlevania Dracula X featuring the sprite of Trevor Belmont from Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. I just bought this one from another Castlevania collector, and it’s sealed. Quite annoying since I’d like to try it.. but I will most likely open it up soon ;D

Sega Mega Drive / Genesis Castlevania

Castlevania The New Generation
This Castlevania game was only released on the 16-bit sega. This one is PAL for the Sega Mega Drive, complete and in awesome condition ^^ It was also released in Japan and for the Genesis. It also goes by the name “Bloodlines”.

Castlevania (The New Generation)
I also got this Russian pirated version of Castlevania The New Generation. I think the cover is really cool ^_^ That image from the first Castlevania is one of my favorites :) The case is much smaller than regular Sega Mega Drive boxes.

PC Engine Castlevania

Akumajō Dracula X: Chi no Rondo 悪魔城ドラキュラX 血の輪廻 (Castlevania Rondo of Blood)
This is a rare Castlevania game called Rondo of Blood for the PC Engine! :D I also have a PC Engine duo (which reads CD’s) now so that I can play it, great game! Super hard! I uploaded a video of the intro here >>

Akumajō Dracula X: Castlevania Rondo of Blood
This is a reproduction of the PC Engine game made by PCE Works. Beautiful packaging ^_^ They also had a limited edition box that was stunning a while back, but I heard about it too late so it was sold out :(

Nintendo 64 N64 Castlevania

Castlevania
The first Castlevania game for the Nintendo 64. Definitely not a favourite.. Castlevania games really should stay in the 2D platforming genre…

Castlevania Legacy of Darkness
When I finally bought Legacy of Darkness for the N64 I realized it was the same game as Legend of Cornell in Japan.. XD

Akumajou Dracula Mokushiroku 悪魔城ドラクラ黙示録 (Castlevania)
I have the N64 Castlevania game in it’s Japanese release as well.

Akumajou Dracula Mokushiroku Legend of Cornell 悪魔城ドラクラ黙示録レゲンドオブコーネール (Castlevania Legacy of Darkness)
This is the Japan release of Legacy of Darkness for the Nintendo 64, same awkward 3D adventure as most N64 games>_<

Nintendo DS / 3DS Castlevania

Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow
The first Castlevania game for Nintendo DS. It’s decent and back to 2D platforming ^_^

Castlevania Portrait of Ruin
Another Castlevania game for the DS, I got this new (that’s why it’s scanned with plastic around). Also a good 2D platforming Castlevania adventure :)

Castlevania Order of Ecclesia
This one is also brand new, another Castlevania game for the DS. This one however I had the game cartridge for previously so I have played it and got pretty far, and it was great! But then I got stuck >_<

Castlevania Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate
Got the new 3DS Castlevania game which is a spinoff of the Xbox game Lords of Shadow. They added excessive use of 3D in this game, they could have just stuck to the traditional 2D platforming experience, it would have been better!

Sega Saturn Castlevania

Akumajou Dracula X – Gekka no Yasoukyoku (Castlevania Symphony of the Night)
This is Symphony of the Night, which was also released for the Playstation 1. It also came out on Sega Saturn in Japan.

Playstation Castlevania

Castlevania Chronicles
A PAL edition of the Castlevania Chronicles for the Playstation 1 (PS1)

Castlevania Symphony of the Night
A mint complete edition of a PAL SOTN. Here’s where the Metroidvania style of Castlevania games began. I like it alot ^_^ I especially love that they went back to 2D platforming instead of messing around with awkward 3D..

Akumajou Dracula X Gekka no Yasoukyoku (SOTN)
I recently bought a Japanese copy of Symphony of the Night from a fellow Castlevania collector.

Playstation 2 Castlevania

Castlevania Lament of Innocence
First Castlevania adventure for the Playstation 2. Here they went back to 3D, however I must say it looks better than on the N64 ;D

Castlevania Curse of Darkness
Another Castlevania game for the PS2. Forgot to remove that stupid sticker on the front before scanning >_> too lazy to scan again..

Castlevania キャッスルヴァニア
This is Castlevania Lament of Innocence from Japan. I don’t usually collect the same game for various regions, I’m usually satisfied with having just a copy of the game so I can play it. However, this was a Castlevania game and I got it pretty cheap so I couldn’t resist it ;D

Castlevania Lament of Innocence
The same goes for this NTSC version of Lament of Innocence. So now I have three XD It’s interesting though to see how different the three artworks from various regions are :)

PSP & PS3 Castlevania

Castlevania The Dracula X Chronicles
Mint PAL edition for the PSP. This one I was particularly happy about when I got since I would be able to play the rare Rondo of Blood adventure that had been released long ago on the PC Engine, but NOW that I HAVE a PC Engine I am looking for the actual Rondo of Blood for the PC Engine. Soooooon it will most definitely be a part of my Castlevania collection :D edit: I now possess the PC Engine version too ^_^

Castlevania Lords of Shadow Collection
I found this collection for PS3 on a sale, had to get it since it was Castlevania, even though I hardly ever play on my PS3 ;D

Nintendo Wii & Xbox 360 Castlevania

Castlevania Judgement
This is the only Castlevania game I know of for the Wii. I don’t really play the Wii that much, but now I have to try this game out ^_^

Castlevania Lords of Shadow
And finally a Castlevania game for the Xbox 360 (achievements!! :D). I’ve played it a bit, and it’s like all other new games, an adventure game in 3D.. I really do prefer my Castlevania games to be 2D :(

Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2
I also have the second game in the LoS series. Haven’t even bothered trying this one out yet though… I miss the oldschool Castlevania games >_<

Castlevania Belmont Limited Edition
My latest Castlevania acquisition was this Belmont limited edition for the Xbox 360. It was just so pretty ^_^

Castlevania Soundtracks

Castlevania Circle of the Moon Soundtrack 悪魔城ドラキュラ 白夜の協奏曲 オリジナルサウンドトラック
The original soundtrack for Circle of the Moon to Game Boy Advance. This one is amazing! Here are some of my favorite Castlevania songs! :D

Castlevania The Dracula X Chronicles Soundtrack 悪魔城ドラキュラ Xクロニクル オリジナルサウンドトラック
I also have the original soundtrack from Japan for the PSP game: Castlevania The Dracula X Chronicles. This is a 2-disc collection, quite nice ^_^ It bugs me that they put the cover image in the wrong direction..

Akumajou Dracula Famicom Best Soundtrack 悪魔城ドラキュラ ファミコン・ベスト
This is a collection of all the soundtracks from the first three NES/Famicom games. Some of the best Castlevania tunes ^_^

  1. Nice collection (again!). The PC-Engine game isn’t cheap, but is worth getting just to see it on a TV and not a tiny PSP screen. Also, DEFINITELY play Lords of Shadow when you get the chance. It’s a nice blend of old and new, long as hell and there’s a LOT of replay value with all the little (optional) challenges the game asks you to tackle.

    • I BOUGHT IT TODAY! :D Will be updating the Castlevania collection post any day now as soon as my new purchases has arrived! I got 5 Castlevania games today that I didn’t previously own ^__^ One of them was the PC Engine Rondo of Blood :D Can’t wait for them to arrive!!! :D
I might play some Lords of Shadow tonight! Unless I get sucked into Borderlands again… ;D

  2. Nice to see you take a break from playing Borderlines and doing something more useful. You’ve missed out on a couple of rare japanese castlevania games on Tradera recently. The buyer of those games must have a bigger collection than you have. :)

    • There was one guy from France who had a huge Castlevania collection (original stuff only)… Adol, i think his handle was. If it’s him selling his stuff, it’s going to be in super shape and complete.

Oh: I may aas well try to get stopwhispering to play a RPG here:

      http://slashie.net/page.php?6

Yeah, it’s Castlevania-themed, hard as hell but fun if you like rogue-likes.

      • It’s probably not, the stuff fredJ was talking about it on a Swedish site.
I’ve never heard of rogue-likes. What is that? I don’t like RPG’s though hehe.. so ehm.. yeah.. I’ll check it out though ^^

      • The Castlevania series has nothing to do with Roguelikes. Perhaps you meant Metroidvania?

        Roguelikes should at least contain:
        – Randomly generated stages. Every time you play!
        – Permadeath. You start from the very beginning. Every time you die!
There are many different opinions what a “real” Roguelike is. If you are more intrestead in the definition; Google around for a while and youll get some answers.

A couple of my favorite Roguelikes/Roguelites, so you can get a feeling of what kind of games Roguelikes are:

        Rogue
        Spelunky
        Nethack
        Dungeons of Dredmore
        Rogue Legacy
        Downwell
        Crypt of the NecroDancer
        Risk of Rain
        The Binding of Isaac

Many people are mixing up and misunderstands sandbox, metroidvania, roguelikes and similar genres. But there are very distinct definitions of them all. Google them up if you are intrestead!

BTW, Heidi; Best Castlevania collection ever!!!!! :)

  3. Awesome collection, as always!

I can’t believe you don’t have VAMPIRE KILLER on the MSX though! It’s a really good alternate version to the NES game, and is more maze-like and such. It also seems to have a few elements that were used in CV2 later on.

    • Thanks! :D
Well I don’t have the MSX yet.. so I wouldn’t be able to play it, and I haven’t been looking around for games for that system. But I will probably get it eventually ^^ Is there really such a big difference from the original on the NES?

  4. I didn’t realize there were so many Castlevania’s. It really looks awesome seeing them all together. I really like the NDS versions. And I’m pretty jealous that you have the Mega Drive versions! That’s hard to get!
I hope you’re thinking about a video game room picture update :) You’ve added so much more stuff since your last one.

    • Haha well there’s even more believe it or not! I just ordered 7 castlevania games that I didn’t previously own just the two following days after making this post since it was bugging me that I didn’t have them lol ^_^
I prefer the GBA versions to the NDS version that I’ve tried.
I added some direct links on my main page on the right linking to my current collection posts, and I was thinking of updating them whenever I get the time. Sega has been falling behind for a while, since I don’t have more room on my shelves for them, seriously I have so many huuuge piles of Sega games just lying around in my Retro Room right now, I don’t know where to put them >_<

      • 7 more?! That’s awesome. So after these 7 arrive will you the have all Castlvanias? :)
You know I really do love the GBA. As good as the NDS is I think the GBA SP is my favorite hand held. I have two Castlevania’s for the GBA and they are both excellent. I love when the franchise switched to the Metroid style. It’s excellent being able to save your progress.
Piles of Sega games just laying around?! Are you trying to make me jealous? If your book shelves are deep enough you can stack the less exciting games in the back and face your favorite ones up front. Helps for space and personally I think it looks great when a shelf is jam packed with games :) But you already know that… I’ve thrown a lot of my game collection pictures at ya for a long time now :P
Isn’t having too many retro videos a great problem to have?

      • No I don’t think so.. there’s probably some more rarities I’m lacking.. like the one for MSX, I didn’t even know about that one, but then again I don’t even own the system… yet! :D
GBA SP is my favourite too out of the Gameboys! Since it’s completely backwards compatible as well ^^ And I also really love my Super Game Boy for Super NES! It’s brilliant to play GameBoy games on your TV ^_^
        I also love the Metroid-vania style ^^
hehe I know piles doesn’t sound like a bad problem to have haha ^^ But luckily enough my bf just suggested today that he might be open to the suggestion of changing rooms with his study and my retro room! That means twice the size for me! :D More walls to fill! :D
I will definitely make sure to take more pics then if we change and it would be better pics! :D

    • It sure is a great series of games, and definitely one of my favourites :D Another favorite is the Metroid series, so I was super pleased when the two started merging after Symphony of the Night ^_^ Metroid-vania FTW! :D

  7. Wow, this is quite curious (and a nostalgia trip). I was just remembering this old image I liked: “No One Wants to Play SEGA With Harrison Ford”, thinking of it as a good facebook cover image, and then, among other sites, I found it on this one: http://thesegacollection.wordpress.com/2012/09/16/no-one-wants-to-play-sega-with-harrison-ford/ …accidentally noticed who liked the blog post, found this blog and was just kind of randomly browsing through it, but then I noticed:
    1) Castlevania being mentioned rather a lot and
    2) That you’re apparently from Sweden as the comments above suggest.

I’m a video gamer myself (though used to be more than I am now), a great Castlevania fan, like Konami a lot and I used to used to hang out a little at the Castlevania Dungeon under the name of Mysterious. I’m from Denmark, Copenhagen (maybe close by, I don’t know, at least relatively), and the only series of games I have a collection of now is exactly Castlevania. I love the music too, in particular Castlevania IV, Circle of the Moon and Dracula’s Curse. I actually like 64. The graphics aren’t great, the music is generally not that awesome and it is unforgiving as fuck (like the NES- and GB-games) but I find the atmosphere is actually quite eerie unlike the other games, I feel bad when Richter dies, I vividly remember the mirror scene, the garden with the dawgs and the mysterious “woman” in the water among other things. This track btw. being the exception, which I just put on myself now I got into the CV-mood:
http://youtu.be/HUzLO2GpPv4 …and I also think it is much better than its followup, which had few original ideas and was all too easy. CV64 is not my favourite, that’s probably exactly III, IV or COTM, but still.

Anyway I even made a thread about favourite Castlevania music on this (awesome!) danish console forum many years ago, which I guess you can understand if you understand swedish:
    http://www.playright.dk/forum/emne/5972-castlevania—greatest-hits-musik#450734
…and you can see my Castlevania collection here:

…yours is superior, but I do have Legends and Belmonts Revenge in packaging, I have the PS2 one in limited edition (with a small painting, even) and I have Haunted Castle too on a PCB, but no arcade anymore. If I ever want to sell my games I’ll get in touch with you, though you’ll probably get them elsewhere before judging from the size of your collection in general!
Here’s a greater list of games I’ve ever played including some ratings:
    http://backloggery.com/ominouscloud
If you want to play Contra or some Castlevania game or whatever with me at one point let me know, and maybe we both have time. I think CotM is the best of the GBA-games, I think HoD and AoS are kind of equally good, I thought DoS was boring but I’ve most recently started playing PoR and that seems a lot better. Haven’t yet played OoE.

    Haven’t played:
Judgment, the newest one nor the MSX-one, Rondo of Blood (though I have both of these)

    Haven’t completed:
Bloodlines, Adventure, Belmonts Revenge, Legends (also my favourite of the GB ones, BR being the second one in the GB rankings and adventure the lowest).

    HAVE completed:
I (have reached the last level, but never further without save states), II, III, IV, Vampires Kiss/Dracula X, SOTN, 64, LoD, CotM, HoD, AoS, LoI, CoD.

I would really love to play Mother (the SNES one) soon too, but haven’t gotten around to it, and for other culture favourites they
can be seen here http://xlysx.tk (movies on Flixster currently), which probably includes a ranking of (looking at your wallpaper to the right) rankings of the Batman-movies, (of the 90s Batman I rate them 1st: Returns 2nd: Forever 3rd: Batman 4th: Batman & Robin

    • Hey Marcus,
thanks for your comments ^^ I’m happy you stumbled upon my blog, and yes, we’re almost neighbors! ;D I live in the south of Sweden ^_^
It’s nice to meet another Castlevania fan! :D It is my favorite series and I’ve just ended up collecting every game I’ve come across bearing the name Castlevania ^^
Cool that you’ve still got your Castlevania collection, I would never get rid of mine, and I don’t think you should either, you would just regret it afterwards if you ever did ;D
Among some of my favorite Castlevania titles are Aria of Sorrow for GBA, Legends for GB, The first one for NES and SoTN on PS. I looooove the music of CotM GBA, it’s playing everyday in my car ;D I’ve just played through Portrait of Ruin for DS which was really good ^_^ better than DoS in my opinion.

      • Cool, neighbours – yeah! :D So if Dracula appears somewhere nearby we both know who to get in touch with to put a stop to him, maybe along with Soma, I guess?

Actually just found an old picture of my collection, though without Haunted Castle: http://i.imgur.com/eQav7.jpg

It’s my favourite series too, but I also like things like the Zelda-series a lot, and I’ve also played many of the Final Fantasy-games, so I actually like RPG’s, including JRPGS where you play the role of someone else, locked into a story line with no influence on it whatsoever ( ;) ) , but then I like the stories, the graphics, the music. No precision jumping, medusa heads, bottomless pits, Dracula with access to Dracula IKEA for quick, generic Castlevania decoration, no people in houses wanting to live together with you at first sight ( http://youtu.be/UrLdIiW6bEo )
etc. <– that is my the way an AWESOME AVGN video series, but I assume you've already seen it. I almost get goose bumps from just thinking about it. I like CV 2 unlike avgn, though it has it's faults. I think the only time I've ever peed my pants when awake was in Dracula's Castle in CV 2. ;D Completely empty, gray and with spooky music. I also love the town by day in particular, more than Bloody Tears.

Hm, why do you like AoS more than HoD? :) HoD is not very popular, but I think it (mainly because of the music) has a quite desparate atmosphere that I like, and I LOVE the Chapel of Dissonance track. But maybe the levels are a bit more generic, I don't really recall? In AOS I like the underground reservoir track in particular, and blazing around the castle with the Black Panther soul or what it's called.

Looking forward to resuming PoR, then! :-) Will probably start in a few days. That's on emulator though, but without save states. I do have the original, just no DS.

I see you play shoot 'em ups too, and that's a genre I'd like to play more. I've primarily played (and LOVE) Lifeforce Salamander ( Konami :D ), but not that many others.

Looking at your listing again Rad Gravity is one weird game. Me and my siblings rented it when we were kids but never got very far.

      • Haha for sure! Soma would probably be of great assistance ;D

That’s a nice collection! I’ve never been into Zelda though.. long story..
Final Fantasy is nice though, but I haven’t had the time to go through all of them, I’ve finished VII, X and XIII and played a bit through I, III and X-2. Right now I’m totally obsessed with Theatrhythm Final Fantasy for the 3DS though! It’s AMAZING!!

I’ve seen all AVGN vids, he’s awesome ;D

I don’t dislike HoD but I actually haven’t finished it yet, right now my bf is going through it. I guess that will be my next project after PoR ;D

Rad Gravity is cool, but quite hard ^^ Do you still have an NES?

      • Haha, yeah. Now we know what to expect! ;D

Thanks! Long story? (Zelda) I’m curious to hear it though? :)

FF: I’ve finished VI, VII, VIII, IX, X and almost XIII, and I would rank them from best to worst: VII, VIII, X, IX, VI and XIII. Some people would probably hang me for putting VI there.
XIII is very beautiful and with decent music, but the characters and unspiring, the game play is fairly boring and way too easy and the story not all that interesting. What did you think about it?

You’re playing PoR too right now?

Yes, with my siblings, modded to be able to play US games too! :D I assume you do too. ;P No Famicom though, but I would love to try the japanese version of Castlevania III!

“Theatrhythm Final Fantasy” <– ooh, tell me more!

      • well (since you asked for it, here’s comes the long, and not too exciting story of me and Zelda-games), I never played Zelda as a kid, since I never got any consoles myself, and Zelda wasn’t the type of game your friends would bring out so that you could play together. I played a lot of Ice climbers, Super Marios Bros (1,2,3) and other fun games instead. So when I got older and started collecting I had understood that the Zelda games were quite popular, hence I bought them all (or at least most of them) and thought I would start off by playing them in chronological order from when they were released to re-live the excitement everybody had towards the Zelda series.. I started with the first one for the NES, I even printed myself a 2 A3 paper sized map of the game and set out to finish it.. however, after 3 hours of pointless running around, confusion and frustration of never ending up where I thought I would and not finding anything on the map, I finally gave up. (I also need to point out that I in general do not like RPG’s, I don’t have the time or the patience). So I rage-quit the game, was furious and vowed to never play another Zelda game (because of my pride you must understand how painful it was not being able to finish the first game) >-<
I know "the best ones" are on the N64, but frankly, I dislike the N64 the most out of all the systems ever made, because of the ugly 3D and sucky controllers that feels like a hollow piece of plastic..
So yeah, I don't like Zelda, I respect the fact that people do adore it, but it's just not my "thing"..

I didn't dislike XIII, the music was really good and I actually liked that it didn't get too complicated since I don't have much time to put into RPG's (and as I said above, I generally don't like RPG's, but FF is the only series I've been following)

Theatrhythm is amazing though! It's a rhythm game that let's you play through all the songs from ALL the final fantasy games :D I LOVE MUSIC/RHYTHM GAMES!

Yup, I'm still on PoR, I'm at the Final Boss.

Do you have a 3DS btw?

      • Zelda: A sad story! My favourites are not the N64-ones, but Zelda III. Seeing you being an awesome retro gamer (kind of like me, except thay you’re probably a better player and more dedicated) I really think you should give it a shot. It is wicked!! Ocarina of Time comes in second, Majora’s Mask is pretty awesome, but quite depressing to play. I still haven’t completed that. I don’t think Zelda (1) is all that great, so please don’t disregard the others because of that, I think. :) And II is apparently worse, so playing chronologically to get excited might not be ideal. Just listen to how epic is: http://youtu.be/sslj06K-Nlw
…but getting over such trauma might not be that simple though? :/

I played a lot of Ice Climber too, but unfortunately have never completed it. Have you? :)

Yeah, RPG’s can really make time disappear(!), particularly the open world ones, like The Elder Scrolls Series, Fallout and the like! Those, and adventure games (without clear goals), I, unfortunately, never get around to playing. Even something like the Monkey Island-series.

I btw. made a playlist of my favourite AVGN episodes that I remember:

And another of my favourite NES-music (a small selection, still need to add favourite Castlevania ones):

A highlight from the above list:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZ9xwkMr3e4 (apropos the intro to Captain Silver)
…I would’ve also chosen some tracks from Battle of Olympus, but they’re not online…yet!
I’d love to hear some more of your favourite video game music!

Of the rhythm games I like Gitaroo Man in particular! :-) And Parappa after that. Beatmania was way too difficult for me, and I never really played the Guitar Hero-games.

        No 3DS unfortunately, why?

Great luck on the final boss in DoS! I’m not that far at all, but on the other hand I just finished Journey to Silius for the first time. Hooray!

Now you can delete the first post (duplicate), as that version only had this extra part above that the second one didn’t (but was supposed to have).

    • I’m not really that into RPG’s though. I have Mother for the Famicom and that’s kind of useless since it’s all in japanese. I can barely make it through an hour of an RPG in english ;D I get bored if there’s not enough precision jumping or action! or a puzzle to solve (like tetris) ^_^

      • Action and puzzles remind me of the Soul Reaver-series Have you played it? If not you should! (The first one in particular, the second one maybe for the story, skip the third one, it sucks.) But you probably have. :-)

  11. Harmony of Dissonance was actually my fav. of the GBA games. It was, I felt, the most well rounded, it was just a blast to play through, and I really liked the item/magic book dynamic. Plus you play the grandson of Simon Belmont…how could people NOT like that?

Awesome collection though. You truly are dedicated!

  15. Stunning collection. My favorite series for the nes. I just returned to Japan and picked up the original famicom cart from the Friends shop.
