Retro Games convention in Stockholm!

This weekend in Stockholm was really awesome and totally surpassed my already high expectations :D After attending a book release and having an awesome after party at an arcade on Friday I spent Saturday at a retro game convention called simply Retro Games :) This is the third year in a row that Retro Games is being held, and I’ve missed it the previous years due to so many other conventions taking place this time of year here in Sweden. Also Stockholm is kind of far away for me.. but this time I was determined to check it out, and boy am I glad I did! :D

Retro Games Stockholm

I was there already when they started setting up, so I could get some nice pictures of all the arcades. I’ve heard that the Retro Games convention is more focused on gaming than the buying or selling of retro games, and this was kind of true. The venue was smaller than a lot of the other retro game conventions, but the ratio of sellers contra arcades were different here. THERE WERE SO MANY ARCADE MACHINES!  In the main room with the vendors there were 7 various candy cabs, both newer and older ones, containing great shmups set to free play ^_^ I just think these Japanese cabinets are so beautiful <3 Sorry for the picture spamming below, but DAMN they’re just all so pretty! XD

Then there were even more arcades in the other room! Old classics such as Space Invaders, Defender, Tempest, Pole Position, Centipede, Missile Command, Asteroids, Robotron 2084 and also a few that I wasn’t as familiar with like Battlezone, Space Firebird and Space Duel. Missile Command is really hard in my opinion.. but I really enjoy Tempest, Asteroids and Robotron 2084! Also Battlzone was really interesting with different controls ^_^

There were of course still a lot of great sellers there to show off some awesome goods! This time I took the train up to Stockholm though so I had to restrict myself from buying the whole place XD I didn’t buy more than I could carry ^_^ But I had so much fun talking to friends that were there and meeting internet acquaintances and new people as well! I barely had time to browse through everything that was being sold XD

Retro Games has three years in a row held the Swedish Championships of Pac-Man at the convention. I’ve never played Pac-Man on arcade but thought I might as well try it out. I actually managed to get the 6th highest score and made it to the take-outs! :D Then I lost XD

Retro Games is definitely not the biggest retro gaming convention in Sweden, but it has a nice mix of both playing retro games and buying them, and also of course a really nice lineup of people attending it! :D I will definitely try to go back next year ^_^

Pixel K.A.F.E. in Malmö!

I visited Pixel K.A.F.E. for the first time on the day of the Sci-Fi World convention in Malmö last month. I’ve been wanting to visit it for quite some time, but it’s a bit far away for me so I haven’t been able to.. but it was just as good as I had imagined! If not better! :D Pixel K.A.F.E. is a restaurant / arcade where you can eat, have a coffee, play pinball, play arcades games, board games or even old retro games! The entire place is also decorated with wonderful retro gaming nostalgia :D …. and Darth Vader!

My favorite part is all the original arcade cabinets! Especially the Atari Tetris arcade :D (sooo pretty and I loooove Tetris!) There are no other places around here in Sweden where you can find arcade cabinets like this and just play ^_^ Pixel K.A.F.E also. has a wide variety of arcades! There’s the retro games, the blast city cabs, the beautiful Mega cabinet, the Time Crisis cabinet with guns and also racing :) It almost feels like I’m back in the 80’s and 90’s!

There’s not only arcades, but also a whole room filled with six different pinball machines! :D I tried some of them out and came to the conclusion that I’m not particularly good at pinball ;D I prefer video games ^__^

There are also old games and consoles on display all over the place! They’ve got an amazing Game & Watch collection and a bunch of other cool things to look at! Some stuff that I’ve never even seen! ;D

Apart from arcades you can also pick games you want to play on the TV’s, there’s 4 of them set up around the place with couches, it’s really cozy ^_^ Or you could go battle your friends in some classic pong games on the Odyssey 2001 :D

Apart from all of this awesomeness they also serve THE BEST BURGER I HAVE EVER EATEN!! Seriously! I am being serious ^__^ I’m a vegetarian and they’ve got both meat, vegetarian and vegan food, and they’re burgers are to die for! ^_^ If you’re ever around Malmö in Sweden you have GOT TO check this place out :D

Computer Spiele Museum in Berlin!

This weekend I’ve been to Berlin with my friend NinjaBrite, we had a relaxing weekend with a lot of fun. One of the best things we experienced though was the Computerspielemuseum (Video Game Museum). It’s a permanent museum on Karl Marx Allee in central Berlin and it’s got a lot to offer!

They had loads of retro gaming consoles on display in pretty green boxes, all labeled with the name of the system. I photographed mainly all the ones I didn’t own, so I would remember what to look for next ;D There was only one game displayed in these green boxes, which was Atari’s E.T.! But there were lots of other games there that you could play in other areas.

They also had an arcade area with original old arcade cabinets that were free to play!! This was totally exciting for me since I’ve hardly ever gotten to play any arcade machines, except when I was in Japan. The coolest one was of course the original Pong arcade cabinet, and an old spacey green arcade cabinet with some kind of shooter. You only got the try these out on mondays though and we were there on a thursday :( but we got to play a lot of Donkey Kong, Space Invaders II, Frogger, Gauntlet, Asteroids and others ^^

There were a lot of cool things to see, read about and experience. For example they had 4 computers playing Ludo against eachother, a 5 player pong you could try out, a computer you could ask anything and another computer which was impossible to beat!

NinjaBrite tried so many times to figure out how to beat the computer in this light game

Immediately at the entrance there were life sized statues of famous characters such as Link from Zelda, Rayman, Jak & Daxter and Lara Croft ^_^

They also had a GIANT Atari Joystick! It was even working and hooked up to an Atari 2600 Junior and you could play Pacman with it ^_^ I of course had to try it out! It was difficult but worked well!

Another cool game we tried out was Rom Check Fail! This was a recently made game (don’t remember by who..) that was basically a bunch of old classic games merged together in one big glitch! Really hard but really fun to play ^^ One second you’re playing as Pacman in Mario world, the next your the Asteroids ship flying around in Hyrule haha ^_^

This was a GREAT museum! And I recommend anyone going to Berlin to go see it ^_^
