Trading games for games ^_^

A guy recently contacted me because he saw that I had some games for trade on my blog, we started emailing back and forth and he actually had a bunch of Famicom games and a few other games that I didn’t have, so we made a nice deal ^_^ He received a few boxed Sega Mega Drive and Master System games for a few loose Famicom and Game Boy carts. I’m really happy with the trade, especially with the cute handheld I also got! It’s TETRIS :D And I played it for almost 2 hours when it first arrived XD

What’s odd about this Tetris game is that it only gives you points for each block you place, you don’t get points for making rows or even a “Tetris”.. it’s seems to be more mission based, once in a while you level up and they clear the board and give you a piece of the rocket it seems :) Then it starts over, slightly more difficult. It also took a while to get into the controls, since it doesn’t have an up or down button, at least down I’m used to pressing when I wan’t them to go a bit faster, here there’s only left and right. Instead there’s a drop-button where A or B usually sits, I accidentally pressed this one so many times and just threw the piece down XD It was a nice challenge though!

The Famicom games I got were mainly the ones you’ve gotten to see my first Famicom Impressions posts of ^_^ There’s yet another one coming soon ;D

I picked a bunch of Game Boy games that I thought looked interesting, these Japanese carts still deceive me though XD Only a handful were playable, the rest were mainly RPGs or some kind of strategy or weird Japanese game that was just boring.. Maybe I should start making Game Boy impressions as well :)

The final one  among the pictures above is a game by Konami called Hunter X Hunter: Hunter no Keifu, not to be confused with Hunter X Hunter: Kindan no Hihou. I briefly looked up the gameplay beforehand, which I usually never do, and I thought this was an awesome Castlevania-like sidescrolling platformer (which Kindan no Hihou is), but this one is not that… I don’t even know what genre this specifies under.. RPG/Strategy/walk-around-pointlessly-on-grids-without-any-action-what-so-ever?!? Anyway, below is some gameplay from it.. it has some nice music that quickly becomes repetitive, but apart from that I’m completely lost to it’s purpose.. I have since ordered Hunter X hunter: Kindan no Hihou through eBay, can’t wait for that one to arrive! :D

Famicom Impressions: Pooyan

Famicom Impressions

Out of the last couple of Famicom games I picked up, this was the most playable, until the 2nd stage at least…. This is the Famicom Impression of Pooyan プーヤン (HFC-PO) released by Konami in 1985. An arcade-like platform game. It was I think an arcade game before it was ported to console.

You can really tell the difference between games released in the more than 10 year span of the Famicom’s lifetime. This one is from 1985, and the Dragon Ball Z game I made an impression of yesterday is from 1993. Just compare the graphics! And this is Konami, which has given us amazing things such as Castlevania, TMNT, Parodius, Contra, Crisis Force and many more..  most of these games are from the very late 80’s to the early 90’s though.

Pooyan - Famicom

So basically the game is about shooting the balloons that hold the wolves so that they fall to their death instead of climbing up the ladder to eat you and your family alive. Fairly easy concept, but there’s loads of wolves coming down simulateously, and eventually they get different colored balloons, some will shoot back at you so you have to dodge as well. Once I got to stage two though I got stuck. HOW THE HELL DO YOU SHOOT THE BALLOON OF THE PINK WOLF?!?!? As you can see in the video below the pink wolves block every single arrow I shoot at them! >_< Since I couldn’t kill them 5 new enemies spawned every time I let one slip, and there was always a new pink one there! It was destined to fail..

Pooyan - Pink Wolf Sucks!

Apart from that no Japanese language is needed to play this game, it’s not the best game on the Famicom, but certainly not the worst, however I’m fairly sure it’s the worst Konami game every made >-<

Here’s the video of my firtst attempt:

You should seriously Play: Yume Penguin Monogatari (Famicom)

Yume Penguin MonogatariYume Penguin Monogatari is a platform/shooter game by Konami for the Famicom. This game was only released in Japan, and I can understand why with it’s bizarre story!
You play as Penta, a chubby penguin who has lost his girlfriend Penko to a cool penguin with dark shades, and he needs to win her back!

In this game you don’t have a life bar and there is no way to die on the stages, but there’s a fitness bar, showing Penta’s current obesity status! Penko’s new boyfriend is sending out troops of enemies to throw foods at Penka. If something hits him he automatically eats it and becomes a bit more fat! When you reach the fattest phase he can hardly move and his only attack is to throw himself on his belly and wiggle around! lol

You can find fitness drinks around the stages that will get Penka to Shape Up! When you’re less obese you can kick enemies, and if you get really fit you can shoot out the japanese letter PO (ポ) from your mouth “PO PO PO” ^_^

If you reach the end of the stage and your fitness bar is pink, you will have to replay the stage, because Penta was too fat for his ex to take him back! This is just hilarious! :D However, if he’s fit enough (when the meter is blue) he will begin to win her over and you get to go to the next stage. You have unlimited tries (as far as I know) on each stage.

The second stage is a shooter, once again you will have to get fit and avoid flying apples and rise balls (onigiri) that the enemies will chuck at you. You will reach a boss at the end of the stage, when you shoot him you’ll get fitness drinks, but he will also constantly shoot food at you. Even if you beat him you will still have to be fit to be able to continue on to the next stage. If you’re obese you’ll just have to replay the stage again.

There’s  various stages in this game, both platform and shooter stages. It’s really funny and obscure! The music is great, just what you would expect from an 8-bit Konami game :) I love how the feeling of the controls change with Penta’s various obesity phases, it’s fast and easy when you’re fit and really slow and troublesome when you’re  obese, your attacks also change. It’s brilliant! You should Seriously Play this game! :D

! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! SPOLER ALERT ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

When you beat the game you will get to fly away with your girlfriend. She will take you back and you will get a kiss and start blushing.. after that you sit under a tree under the star sky and then Penko turns around and starts eating and gets OBESE!! irony ^_^ lol

Reflections on my Famicom Library, anyone? :)

My Famicom Library is meant to be  of help for people who are also collecting for the Famicom. Like finding the name of a certain cartridge or looking up what kind of genre a certain game is. But I would love some feedback, is there any information lacking that could be of interest? Should I rate the games if they’re good or bad or decent? Should I add the cartridge colour to the description so that you could ctrl+F search for  i.e “Turquoise” to skip through all the turqoise coloured cartridges? Any ideas or comments are welcome ^_^

Anyway, here’s some newly added games to my collection:

Ganbare Goemon 2
An interesting asian style platformer by Konami

Hana no Sutā Kaidou
A really interesting platformer where you control two characters on the screen simultaneously. It creates an interesting challenge ^_^

Jajamaru Ninpou Chou
I thought this game would be just like Jajamaru no Daibouken but it’s not :( This one is an RPG >_<

Mad City
Mad City IS The Adventures of Bayou Billy (by Konami)

Metal Gear
I don’t think this game needs an introduction ;D

Nishimura Kyoutarou Mystery Super Express Satsujin Jiken
I call anything with too much text an RPG. Even though this actually is some kind of murder-mystery-crime-solving-bullshit.

O, P, Q & R! Famicom Collection ^_^

Updated my Famicom Library up to R tonight! Among some of the updates were of course the Rockman games I have, Rolling Thunder, Puzznic, Red Ariman (which is Gargoyles Quest for NES), Penguin-kun Wars, Pac-Land, and a bunch of great Konami games, like Rampart, Road Fighter and Quarth!!

And much much more, so go check it out! :D

Konami games for Famicom & Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa!

I’ve been going on a retro-gaming-shopping-spree trying to find all the Konami games for the Famicom. It is my favorite game company ^_^ So far I have 34 Konami games for the Famicom and 21 on the Famicom Disk System :D

I love how the Konami cartridges almost always have end labels! It makes it so much easier finding the game you’re looking for. Why doesn’t all the games have that?!

I recently received this batch of Famicom Disk System games, that were all Konami as well :D

I’m really happy I finally bought Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa, since I’ve been eyeing it for quite some time now on Ebay!

Complete and in great condition! Almost like new :D

It’s a really cute platformer, I will record some gameplay footage soon ^^ Meanwhile here’s some images from the manual!
