Castlevania Legends – Game Boy

Castlevania Legends for Game Boy is a really great Castlevania game, compared to the first Castlevania Adventures for the same platform the movement is smoother, it feels like the character is a bit faster, the whip responds better and most importantly of all: THE HEARTS DO NOT GIVE YOU HEALTH! Like we have learned in previous Castlevania games, the hearts you collect are used for your special ability. In Castlevania legends you receive special abilities after each stage, instead of collecting them through candles, and they’re called soul weapons. You use them like normally in Castlevania games, by pressing up and attack. But there are also a few hidden weapons, like the holy water, throwing dagger etc, hidden in certain candles in a secret area of the maps of each stage (not really secret, mainly just a detour from the standard route).

Another different thing about Castlevania Legends is that you play as a girl, called Sonia.

Through the Super Game Boy for the Super NES they have improved some graphical aspects of the regular Game Boy games, such as giving Castlevania Legends this really neat interface with pillars and stone around the screen instead of the normal boring “Game-Boy-Look-a-Like” screen.

Also the stages have different colors, which makes it feel like you’re really advancing through the game. Here’s some of the stage colors, and in the bottom right corner is the standard sepia/brown that the Game Boy games had as a standard through the SNES.

Some downsides of the game… the bats are annoying as usual and they come in groups and respawn on the screen when you are trying to advance upwards, creepy flying black shades pop from nowhere and have a really annoying pattern which makes it really frustrating to try to hit them, stupid big ass knights that charge you and take way to many hits to kill and hurt you way too much, (SPOILER ALERT!) Alucard is actually one of the bosses (even though he’s a friend to the character, Sonia, he needs her to prove her strength) but he is way too easy to beat =(, Alucard is supposed to be kick-ass!! There are also some special candles that have a different color than regular candles, DO NOT HIT THESE, since they will make you fall into a pit of bad guys which won’t let you out until you are almost drained of health.. stupid…

Apart from this Castlevania Legends was a really great game, but Aria of Sorrow for Game Boy Advance is still my favorite ^_^

Here’s a video I put together of the music, the gameplay, the stages, the bosses and so on.. enjoy! =D

Girl’s Gaming Weekend!

So this weekend I’ve been in Stockholm, playing games with Miss Deluxxe and Ninjabrite, and here’s a little recap of what we were up to! =D

We started off by playing Trine 2. Me and my two closest gaming friends are always on the lookout for nice co-op games for at least 3 people where we can all get achievements. This is not a very easy task. During the years we’ve been going through most of the arcade games which have these aspects, such as TMNT 1983, Turtles in Time, Castle crashers of course and many many others. So when Trine 2 recently came out we were excited and had been waiting to play it until this gaming weekend together. We played for a while, achievements popped for different things some of us were doing, and after some time we realized that all the achievements only went to one person, the player 1 who started the game! The only way for all of us to earn achievements would be if we were playing it on three different xboxes online. Stupid.. why do most games discourage local co-op?!  So we stopped playing it, and will wait until we are once again in different cities only being able to play with each other online. It’s like gaming companies don’t want gamers to actually meet up IRL to play, they make it so much more attractive to play online..

Another game that instead really exceeded our expectations was Fairytale Fights! I’ve had this game for quite some time, but never played it, since me and my friends have been waiting for the next gaming weekend to play it together, and now we finally did! In this game you are fairytale characters that beat up other fairytale creatures. It was funny, filled with gore and blood, brutal, full off events of fun frustration and lead to a lot of laughs. We would also all earn achievements, both story related and personal objectives. This is a fun game that I would recommend to anyone who likes playing together with friends co-op in quest mode or friendly fighting, since the game also has an arena mode where you can see who can kick who’s ass the most ^_^

These were our characters: Snow white, Little Red Riding Hood and the Naked Emperor. Hilarious, I just had to be the Naked Emperor ^_^
I mean, just look at him!! So awkward!

Miss deluxe also showed us her progress in Skyrim, since me and Ninjabrite hadn’t seen it yet, and when she started her last save file something weird happened.. her character was headless. Anyone encountered this before? lol…

Well now it’s back to editing the Castlevania videos! Hopefully I’ll be done soon.. ^^

update and stuff …

Sorry for not having posted any reviews on the Castlevania games yet, I just started using new equipment to record what’s actually on the screen when I play, and now I have hours of video to go through, haha ^^ I will hopefully be finishing up the cutting and editing soon, however I’m away this weekend in Stockholm for a girl’s gaming weekend with some friends, I might be posting about that first ;D

I heart Castlevania!!

Hooray for today! For today I got a special lot of games from the internetz ^___^ One of my favourite game series of all time is Castlevania, and today I received three games from the series that I have not previously owned or even tried!! This is sooo exciting! =D Following is the pictures I took of the games, you can click them if you wanna see them bigger ^^

The first one is Castlevania Legends for Gameboy, complete in great condition!

The second one was Castlevania III Dracula’s Curse for NES! Which now gives me a complete collection of the NES Castlevania games ^_^ Also complete, in pretty good shape (for its age) except the stupid price sticker on TOP of the Original Nintendo Seal >_<

The third one was Castlevania the New Generation for Sega Mega Drive!! Exciting!!! =D This too complete and in really awesome condition, except for a small sticker on the game cartridge but I think it’s removable =)

So tonight I will be absorbed in the mystical fantasy world of Castlevania, slaying Dracula and what not, and tomorrow evening you’ll get to see my reviews of these most likely awesome games! My hopes are high!

Pac Land?!

I still haven’t had the time to go through the Sega Saturn lot, I’ll see if I can do that tomorrow evening.

Tonight my boyfriend agreed to play some Nintendo Famicom with me =) We played some Super Chinese, Xevious, Twin Bee, Road Fighter, Door Door and Pac-Land! I bought a bunch of Famicom games quite recently, and Pac-Land was one of them. I figured it was a similar game to the regular Pac-Man. But no…

Pac-Land (パックランド) is a side scrolling platformer. You are Pac-Man (I assume… with a hat) and the ghosts are there, except they fly airplanes and drop down tiny ghosts on you (kind of like the tiny Goombas that the flying Goombas are dropping in SMB3). There are also cherries to collect, and a tiny Pac-Man head that make the ghosts blink. So far so good…

The weirdest thing about this game is the controls… To walk forward you press A, and to walk left you press B. Why not just use the d-pad for this? No, instead, pressing right left up or down on the D-pad makes Pac-Man with a hat jump. This is just fucked up..

The graphics of the game was pretty dull and simple. Not very much details and the colouring was bad.. Just look at these mountains:

Or the houses with blue windows, AND blue doors:

And at the end of each stage there’s BREAK TIME.. the stages last barely a minute, but I guess the programmers thought people might be sick of this shit after less than a minute, so let’s give them a break from it!

Nice trees…

Well, that’s it for Pac-Land. A bit of a disappointment, since I actually like Pac-Man, which this is NOT.

Today I gave this game another shot, just to see if it got any better. Well, after the third stage you don’t get to “Break Time” anymore, instead it’s.. Fairy land?!?

And on stage 4, you get stuck in limbo… it looks like you are back on stage 3 except that you are walking it backwards because you can’t move any further to the right. So I tried going back, but there’s a giant gap. A cherry appears in the pit and I jumped to grab it and I fell to my death. So on the last life I made a leap of faith into the pit to see if I could reach the other side, but I wasn’t even close. So that’s it for this game. Three levels, get to Fairy Land and then there’s no turning back… >_<

Btw, sorry for the crappy quality of my pics and videos, I had to use my ipod touch since my iphone’s memory was full, and I’m working on getting a recording device for my TV so the videos will kick-ass soon! =D
