Additions to the Famicom Collection

I’m trying to keep up the updating process of my Famicom Library, I’ve still only made it up to the letter “N” but it’s also a process of adding the recent purchases that are on previous letters. Today I’ve added:

1943
A classic shooter by Capcom

Arctic
A very different puzzle game, a bit too smart for my taste O_o

Balloon Fight
A classic Nintendo platformer ^_^

Bats & Terry
An okey side-scrolling platformer.

Contra
An absolute must have from Konami! Great action platformer ^_^

&

Crazy Climber
An arcade type platformer where you have to climb.. It was a bit dodgy though, not sure my copy is working properly, or perhaps I’m just not understanding the controls.. he just… won’t…. MOVE!!!! >_<

Konami games for Famicom & Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa!

I’ve been going on a retro-gaming-shopping-spree trying to find all the Konami games for the Famicom. It is my favorite game company ^_^ So far I have 34 Konami games for the Famicom and 21 on the Famicom Disk System :D

I love how the Konami cartridges almost always have end labels! It makes it so much easier finding the game you’re looking for. Why doesn’t all the games have that?!

I recently received this batch of Famicom Disk System games, that were all Konami as well :D

I’m really happy I finally bought Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa, since I’ve been eyeing it for quite some time now on Ebay!

Complete and in great condition! Almost like new :D

It’s a really cute platformer, I will record some gameplay footage soon ^^ Meanwhile here’s some images from the manual!

PC Engine and Genpei Toumaden

Now I have finally gotten a PC Engine! It’s so cute and still so powerful! It’s got some really great games for it as well ^_^

For those of you who might not know what a PC Engine is, it is a japanese 8bit console that was released in 1987 by NEC and Hudson Soft. It was was later released in many different variations, the one I have is the Core Grafx. A few years after the Japan release the console also entered the North American market under the name Turbo Grafx 16.

Fun fact; the PC Engine holds the world record for the world’s smallest game console ever made according to Guinness World Records (I guess they’re not counting portables) ^_^

The games come in CD cases. They made an add-on with CD-ROM games for the PC Engine, but the first games were on HU Cards developed by Hudson Soft.

It’s really cool ^^ I’m really excited about this new console of mine and I’ve been playing it a lot! The games you see above are Genpei Toumaden 1 & 2, great sidescrolling platform adventures! Both are a lot of fun, but the second one is really hard!! I’ll go more into details and show off some more games soon.

Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti for Famicom

I’ve been looking for this game since I found out about it’s existence, and it’s always been really expensive.. but finally I found it for a decent price on Ebay :D I paid 48 USD and it’s in excellent condition!

It even had all the little notes inside the box

And the manual is so colourful and filled with cute animations ^_^

I wrote a review about the gameplay on Findyourinnergeek, you can check that our here >>

Pirated Famicom carts – Super Mario IV 4 Armadillo & Caveman Games

I’ve never been into Pirated games, but the other day I found these quite cheap and I was in a Famicom-cartridge-shop-a-holic state of mind and they just happened to slip into my possession thanks to my itchy auction-bidding-index-finger ^^

The name of the first game intrigued me, so I googled it. Super Mario IV (4) Armadillo is actually the Armadillo (アルマジロ) game for Famicom that has just been hacked to contain Super Mario as the main character instead. It’s basically the same game, I suggest getting Armadillo instead, the cartridge is prettier ^_^

The original Armadillo cartridge looks like this:

And this is what the pirated fusion of Armadillo with Super Mario Bros 3 looks like compared to the original (the original is on the left):

Mario cannot kill enemies by jumping on them, he has to transform into a ball like in the Armadillo game.

When you turn into a ball to kill enemies it’s basically exactly the same game.

They haven’t even bothered to change the life icon from Armadillo’s head to Mario’s..

Caveman games was released for NES with the same name. It’s a fun sports mini games type of game set in the stone age with cavemen. You can choose different characters and different game types.

They have some really funny competitions like Mate Tossing:

Or Clubbing:

Dino Race:

And various other sports:

Caveman Games is a fun game IF you have a friend to play and laugh with.

Charity game collecting!

Recently I stumbled upon a retro gaming blog focusing on purchasing games through charity organizations. I don’t remember the name of the blog, I accidentally closed the tab after following a link to Oxfam’s webshop where they indeed had some retro games! I found three neat Sega Mega Drive games there in great condition to a very decent price, between 3-5 GBP each, and the money goes to charity! :D The games I got there were Earthworm Jim 2, Mega Games 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Wow.. only sequels o_O I also got Space Invaders Anniversary for the PS2 ^_^

There was of course a lot of crap as well, but it’s worth checking out once in a while, here’s a link to Oxfam’s webshop >>

I have also gotten a bunch of other Sega Mega Drive games recently, Asterix and the Power of the Gods was apparently a quite rare one according to retrocollect.com. I also got Pocahontas which was supposed to be a fun Disney game, however I got stuck on the first screen of the game and couldn’t get any further.. I might give it another go soon though. Also got True Lies since it’s starring Arnold Schwarzenegger! and  Cheese Cat-astrophe starring Speedy Gonzales, a fun platformer. Revolution X was a game based on Aerosmith, you get to see some cutscenes where they are performing but apart from that you are just steering a cross around and shooting guys popping up everywhere, it got kinda boring after a while.. Alisia Dragoon was however a cool platformer where you’re a girl with a dragon. I also got Mega Games 6, it had World Cup Italia, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, The Revenge of Shinobi, Super Hang-On and Columns in it.

I also got a few Master System games this last week.
Dragon the Bruce Lee Story, a platformer where you run around as Bruce Lee, no music just crappy sound effects, slow movement speed and lack of kung-fu moves…
Spiderman Return of the Sinister Six was pretty cool though, I loved shooting Spiderman’s web and swinging around ^^
Back to the Future Part III sucked just as much as AVGN said it did.. I couldn’t get past the first stage either..
The Flash was fun and really fast! Just like the Flash should be ^_^ Made me think of the Big Bang Theory and Sheldon when I was playing it.. zoom zoooom!
Mercs was just like Commando or Ikari Warriors, but the music wasn’t anything special. You had only one life, but quite a lot of health.
Tom & Jerry the Movie was a platformer where you play as Tom and you have to chase Jerry, and if you make it to the end of the stage he actually catches Jerry (even though he never manages to do that in the series!?) It got kind of repetitive after a while and the steering was really stiff..
Aztec Adventure was fun until I died and realized i had to start all the way from the beginning again!! wtf.. I was really into it, changing weapons to get further ahead on the Zelda-look-a-like map areas but as soon as I died they put me all the way back at the beginning of the maze, then I gave up…
Running Battle was at first sight like a Streets of Rage kind of beat’em up until my boyfriend who was trying it out realized he had a gun as well (!) and then it got super easy just shooting all the foes in their faces ^_^
Cyborg Hunter is a platformer where you run around on different levels trying to pick up items that you needed to advance, but the problem was that you had to take an elevator to get to the different levels to search for the items, but the elevators where so hard to maneuver, we couldn’t figure out how to make it go up or down or even how to exit it, it all seemed to happen randomly.. maybe we just couldn’t figure out the controls.. I dunno..

So that was it for my latest  Sega purchases, let me know if there’s any game in particular you’re interested in seeing a deeper review of and I’ll make one ^_^
