Go Go Power Rangers! …for Famicom

I’ve still been collecting and gaming a lot the last couple of months, and my latest addition that arrived in the mail today was two Power Rangers games for Famicom! I’ve seen both of these occationally as pirated copies, and I actually never thought they really existed as released games. Until I bumped into the originals from a japanese seller on eBay ^_^ I bought them instantly because I’ve always wanted to know what they would be like, and I assumed they would be platforming games, which I love!

Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - famicom

The first one is called Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, and this one is not too good.. but they definitely made an effort!

Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - start

Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - yellow
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - pink
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - blue
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - black
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - red
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - evil queen
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - guy

It’s a platforming game, but the controls are a bit slow, unresponsive and stiff. You can collect orbs and when your meter fills you get a scene with the machine/animal the Power Ranger can transform into, but I tried every possible combination of buttons and did not manage to transform >_<
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - screenshot standing
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - screenshot shooting
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - screenshot sitting
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - tiger

Then I reached a boss and 4 hits kill you even though you have a much larger power meter than just 4 bars.. deceiving! After reaching Game Over I gave up, it just wasn’t any fun..
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - boss

However, they have 3 bonus games you can play, some are even 2 player! The first one is some kind of quiz where you get three answers to choose from. This is all in Japanese and I don’t really know that much facts about Power Rangers anyway ;D
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - quiz

The second one is a kind of Pong game, this can be played in VS.
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - pong

In the third one you throw a bomb between you and the monster and who ever holds it when it explodes looses. You can hold it for a little while but if you hold it too long it also explodes even though the time limit isn’t up.
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - throw ball

These extra games are nothing special, they should have put more effort into making the platforming experience better instead!

Choujin Sentai Jetman - famicom
The second Power Ranger game is called Choujin Sentai Jetman. This game was much more fun! It’s also a platformer, and if felt way more like the series I remember from my childhood.

Choujin Sentai Jetman - select Power Ranger

First you run around as the human form Power Rangers, and you can choose from the 5 different ones. The Grey and Red one have swords which kills enemies with 1 or 2 hits. The Pink and Blue one have some type of long range gun, but it takes 2 or 3 hits to kill enemies though. The Yellow Power Ranger has a short range blow that is similar to the sword.
Choujin Sentai Jetman - stage 4
Choujin Sentai Jetman - last stage screenshot
Choujin Sentai Jetman - stage 5

There are 5 various stages to choose freely from.
Choujin Sentai Jetman - select stage

At the end of each stage you reach a boss, and this is when your Power Ranger transforms!
Choujin Sentai Jetman - stage 2 boss

Then you get to fight the monster in a kind of beat ’em up / fighting style battle. This gets quite easy once you learn the patterns of the bosses and how to block in time ^_^
Choujin Sentai Jetman - stage 4 boss
Choujin Sentai Jetman - stage 6 boss

After all 5 stages there’s a 6th Last Stage.
Choujin Sentai Jetman - last stage

The boss on this stage was hard if you tried to have time to block, I eventually just went all in punching him and managed to get more blows in than he did ^_^
Choujin Sentai Jetman - last boss

This games was quite easy, but fun nonetheless :) And the music wasn’t all that bad either ^^

Wagyan Land 3 for Famicom – review, passwords & guide

start screen

Wagyan Land 3 is a very intuitive platform game with puzzle elements. The sprites are cute and the stages are very colorful and has a lot of variation. There are also LOADS of stages! 24 to be exact ^_^ and 16 bosses!
wagyan land 3_1K

I have Wagyan Land 1 & 2 for the Famicom as well, and they’re ok.. but in this third one the platform elements were just a lot more fun and took a lot bigger part in the game compared to the previous Wagyan games.

Wagyan Land 3 - intro

Instead of fire power and hordes of enemies this game uses the colorful platform stages and gravitation to create interesting, variational and most of all fun stages! Usually Wagyan has  a standard high jump, but on some stages the gravitation has been lowered so you can jump even above the screen, this also makes him move slower which makes it more challenging to dodge flying enemies or hazards.
Wagyan Land 3 - stage 1 Wagyan Land 3 - stage 16 Wagyan Land 3 - stage 12

In other stages if you hold the jump button Wagyan will flip gravitation completely so you will be walking in the ceiling, this makes it tricky when avoiding holes both in the floor and the roof. This particular type of stages have gameplay that can be compared to the more recent game VVVVV.
Wagyan Land 3 - stage 5
Wagyan Land 3 - stage 20

In some stages you will have to push buttons in order to flip gravity instead of just holding the jump button, these buttons are of course put in tricky spots where the timing of your steering has to be precise. In another stage the walls are bouncy like a pinball table, Wagyan will only jump diagonally and you will have to predict the landing point so that you will bounce off walls in the desired direction (and hopefully not into a hole in the ground) ^_^
Wagyan Land 3 - stage 13 Wagyan Land 3 - stage 13 2 Wagyan Land 3 - stage 23 Wagyan Land 3 - stage 23 2

There are even stages where he gets a jetpack and you will have to steer around, kind of like Asteroids, by boosting!
Wagyan Land 3 - stage 15 Wagyan Land 3 - stage 21

One touch of an enemy kills you instantly. You can shoot out “ギャ” and “ド” signs but they don’t make the enemies go away, they just freeze them temporarily. Depending on how much power your “gya”-sounds have the longer the enemies will stay frozen. The only items to pick up during stages are stars for points (which might lead to an extra life eventually) and little Wagyans which increase your power when shouting “GYA” ^_^ If you reach 4 in your Power meter you will become invincible :D After it wears off however your Power meter will be back down to 1…
Wagyan Land 3 - stage 18 Wagyan Land 3 - stage 7 Wagyan Land 3 - stage 3

There’s one stage where you need to use your “ギャ” shouts to get around, because they freeze in mid air and you can use them as platforms :DWagyan Land 3 - stage 22 2

There are 16 bosses in total and this is where the puzzle element comes in. There are three different types of boss fights which I will explain here. Most of them are quite easy but some do require some knowledge of basic japanese language.
boss 1
bosses game type

Boss fight: Find-the-number-game
It’s basically what it sounds like, you get a screen with a bunch of numbers and you have to go click the one that the boss tells you to. In all of the bosses except for one (stage 12) the numbers start at 1 and go up, 2, 3, 4 etc.. but in the one on stage 12 he gives you random numbers which makes it a bit harder to predict where to go. It’s still pretty easy though since the boss is extremely slow to react and beat you to it. I only lost a few points when the boss was already standing on the number I was looking for basically ;D
Wagyan Land 3 - boss 7 numbers

Boss fight: Memory
This is just memory, the boss always starts and gets to pick two cards, then it’s your turn to pick two. If they match you get a point. The trick here is to find the pattern. The patterns are usually pretty easy once you get them. Try looking for pictures right next to each other. Here are some examples of the layouts I got, and as you can see the images are almost always either right next to each other or in a predictable pattern diagonally:
Wagyan Land 3 - memory patterns

Boss Fight: Picture-word-game
This is the tricky one.. You basically need to be able to read a bit of japanese hiragana, and it’s even easier if you know some japanese names for random stuff. In the beginning you just need a few points to win so you can make a few trial-and-errors but after a few boss stages it gets harder. The objective of the game is quite simple, if the boss chooses a picture of a “Lemon” it ends with a “N” then you have to pick a picture of something that starts with a “N”, like “Nail”, then the boss has to choose a picture of something that starts with “L” and so on.. but with japanese Hiragana instead of roman letters ;D Every time you get one right you get a point.

Wagyan Land 3 - boss 6 word game

In the beginning I was just guessing and thinking the picture had to be related before I figured out the real objective. I actually made it all the way to the second to last boss before I started having real trouble and actually “got it”. After that I recorded all my attempts and made a guide to help myself through it. I read hiragana and katakana fluently, but my vocabulary in japanese is not that good. My picture recognition is though :D So here’s the guide and this is how you use it: I made a list of all the hiragana letters, the boss will always show which one you are looking for (i.e. 『い』), either you read it or just recognize the symbol and skim through the list, next to the letter I’ve listed all the pictures that can be a correct answer for that letter. Some pictures can have several names, like a “horse” could also be called an “animal” or a “pony”, therefore a picture can be listed under several letters.
Wagyan Land 3 Boss Help

There’s another guide I made in the beginning, it helped me in the first couple of word-stages, but it wasn’t very useful at the end where the possibilities were bigger and pictures changed more frequently. In this guide however you can look for a picture, and the picture below it is a correct answer. This helps if you don’t know how to read hiragana, then you can just look for images instead. However, sometimes that particular correct picture might not be on the screen.. This list isn’t complete since I switched to the other one which was more helpful for me.
Wagyan Land boss help

Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you might pick a picture that ends with a letter that doesn’t have a corresponding picture, in this case you win! :D Except for the last boss, he will just challenge you again and it will start over… As long as you get the required amount of points (get past the bar on the left) then you win.

The final boss will challenge you in all three games, first the word game, then memory and last the numbers.
Wagyan Land 3 - boss 16

You get a password after every single stage! This is generous, and great if you wanna get to a certain stage, like the jetpack stage which has great music! ^_^ And in case anyone gives the game a go and get stuck somewhere, then here is the complete list of stage passwords:

You should seriously Play: Yume Penguin Monogatari (Famicom)

Yume Penguin MonogatariYume Penguin Monogatari is a platform/shooter game by Konami for the Famicom. This game was only released in Japan, and I can understand why with it’s bizarre story!
You play as Penta, a chubby penguin who has lost his girlfriend Penko to a cool penguin with dark shades, and he needs to win her back!

Famicom - Yume Penguin Monogatari - screenshot start
Famicom - Yume Penguin Monogatari - screenshot stealing!Famicom - Yume Penguin Monogatari - screenshot map

In this game you don’t have a life bar and there is no way to die on the stages, but there’s a fitness bar, showing Penta’s current obesity status! Penko’s new boyfriend is sending out troops of enemies to throw foods at Penka. If something hits him he automatically eats it and becomes a bit more fat! When you reach the fattest phase he can hardly move and his only attack is to throw himself on his belly and wiggle around! lol

You can find fitness drinks around the stages that will get Penka to Shape Up! When you’re less obese you can kick enemies, and if you get really fit you can shoot out the japanese letter PO (ポ) from your mouth “PO PO PO” ^_^

If you reach the end of the stage and your fitness bar is pink, you will have to replay the stage, because Penta was too fat for his ex to take him back! This is just hilarious! :D However, if he’s fit enough (when the meter is blue) he will begin to win her over and you get to go to the next stage. You have unlimited tries (as far as I know) on each stage.
Famicom - Yume Penguin Monogatari - blinkingFamicom - Yume Penguin Monogatari - eating

The second stage is a shooter, once again you will have to get fit and avoid flying apples and rise balls (onigiri) that the enemies will chuck at you. You will reach a boss at the end of the stage, when you shoot him you’ll get fitness drinks, but he will also constantly shoot food at you. Even if you beat him you will still have to be fit to be able to continue on to the next stage. If you’re obese you’ll just have to replay the stage again.

There’s  various stages in this game, both platform and shooter stages. It’s really funny and obscure! The music is great, just what you would expect from an 8-bit Konami game :) I love how the feeling of the controls change with Penta’s various obesity phases, it’s fast and easy when you’re fit and really slow and troublesome when you’re  obese, your attacks also change. It’s brilliant! You should Seriously Play this game! :D

When you beat the game you will get to fly away with your girlfriend. She will take you back and you will get a kiss and start blushing.. after that you sit under a tree under the star sky and then Penko turns around and starts eating and gets OBESE!! irony ^_^ lol

Cartridge Comparison: NES vs Famicom

I don’t usually intend to buy games for various platforms if I already have them for one, unless I know that there are major differences in the game. However, sometimes it happens that I buy a game I already have since the name and label are completely different, making me think it’s a completely different game..

Here are some examples where I haven’t realized it was the same game until I actually played and recognized it! :)

Xexyz VS Kame no Ongaeshi Urashima Densetsu
Xexyz is the american NES release, and in Japan it’s called Kame no Ongaeshi Urashima Densetsu.. I did not see that one coming ^_^ It’s great platforming fun though!
Xexyz vs Kame no Ongaeshi Urashima Densetsu

Rockin’ Kats VS Nyankies
Rockin’ Kats is the PAL NES release, and when I got Nyankies (which it is called in Japan) I first thought it was some sort of sports game, since it made me think of the New York Yankees (I think that’s a team in some sport.. not my field of expertise though) ;D Man was I happy to realize it wasn’t a sports game but a fun platformer, a bit less exciting that I already had it though … >.<
Rockin Kats vs Nyankies2

The Krion Conquest VS Magical Kids Doropie
Here I actually got the Famicom game first. I had never seen it before and got really excited when I discovered a copy on eBay.. I paid looots of moneys for it >_< It was fun though! Kind of like a female Mega Man, but harder. Just like a month later I found The Krion Conquest, never heard of that one either, and bought it quite cheap at the Swedish Retro Gaming Exhibition.. when I popped it in I realized it was the same game that I had just spent a fortune on >-<
The Krion Conquest vs Magical Kids Doropie

Dino Riki VS Shinjinrui
Here’s another example of the same game bearing a totally different name. In this case however the cover has similar artwork, a boy raging on a dinosaur haha ^_^
Dino Riki vs Shinjinrui

Air Fortress VS Air Fortress
Of course sometimes I do buy games knowing I already own another version of it.. just because it’s a good game at the right price, or perhaps because I’m curious to see if there are any differences in game play ^_^ Like Air Fortress, I enjoy it and didn’t mind owning it on the Famicom as well.

More Bday gift games ^_^ Aleste, Rock N’ Bolt, Kid Icarus, Gun.Smoke etc

Here’s a few other games I got for my birthday ^_^

Some Famicom Disk System games, most were complete with manual as well, Kid Icarus, Gall Force, Gun.Smoke and Zanac :) I have a copy of Kid Icarus for the NES, however that one doesn’t always work so I’m really happy for this Disk System one :) I also already had Gun.Smoke for the NES, but it’s a great game and it’s always interesting to see if there are any differences between the disk and the cart version ^_^

Then there were two japanese Sega Master System games, Aleste and Rock N’ Bolt. I’m excited to try these out! Rock N’ Bolt I’ve never heard of before ^_^
